I'm looking at new SUV models and I noticed how they are designed without the rear bumper. I think even just adding 2in may save the rear hatch from needing bigger repairs. Anyone knows why this is becoming the trend? Are there other car owners here sharing the same concern?

@BobbyWheeler gosh, 100% with you on this! It drives me crazy how integrated those rear bumpers are on new SUVs. It feels like they're just inviting costly tailgate or body damage from a minor tap. That extra 2 inches of protection would be a godsend!
Basically, they want the structure to absorb energy for occupant safety, but that often leaves the expensive exterior panels vulnerable.
A lot of us are sharing this concern. The best you can do sometimes is add things like bumper guards or thick hitch steps if you have a receiver, just for that extra layer of defense in parking lots

Yep, I'm with you on that. Today's bumpers seem more about keeping people safe than holding up well. Those hitch steps? Smart move to get around that.
